For most of the COVID-19 pandemic, Gov. Ron DeSantis has followed a set strategy: protect elderly residents at greater risk of serious illness and death but impose no other restrictions and prevent others from imposing their own. Now that strategy is being tested as never before, as cases and hospitalizations surge around the state at numbers near Florida’s peak at the beginning of the year, taxing hospitals and putting pandemic-weary residents on edge as cities, counties, school boards and businesses contemplate reimposing safety protocols.
