Bipartisan federal legislation would prohibit enforcement of nondisclosure agreements used by businesses to force employees and customers to remain silent about allegations of sexual assault or sexual harassment. The agreements are more common than people realize, sometimes hidden in new-employee paperwork. “This bill will make workplaces across the country safer and more productive for employers, employees, and consumers,” says U.S. Rep. Lois Frankel, a Palm Beach County Democrat who is the chief sponsor. Gretchen Carlson, the former Fox News anchor who was a major catalyst of the #MeToo movement, says passage possible this year.
