Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick was elected Tuesday as South Florida’s — and the nation’s — newest member of Congress from the Broward-Palm Beach County 20th Congressional District. She fills the vacancy created by the 2021 death of U.S. Rep. Alcee Hastings.
